Jefferson County MOGenWeb presents
Jefferson County, Missouri, in the Civil War

  Cavalry

Our ancestors fought in the Civil War with their relatives, friends and neighbors...sometimes on opposing sides. This page is an attempt to inform and identify those ancestors and their relations. Items can be posted here that are of interest to Civil War buffs and those interested in the Jefferson County area during that time.

This photo is of a reunion of "The Association of the Survivors of the Battle of Shiloh" in about 1896-1909. It is not known whether these survivors are Union, Confederate, or both. The soldier seated 6th from the right in the first row is Jefferson County's own George Washington JACKSON. This photo was contributed by his great-great-granddaughter who found the photo, along with his original discharge certificate. She is posting this photo in hopes of identifying the other soldiers and their other relatives in the photo.

This photo is being posted to be shared with the general public, but is NOT to be sold. It can be shared or linked to freely, with anybody or any website, as long as there is no charge for viewing it.

A Reunion Photo of
"The Association of the Surivors of the Battle of Shiloh"
in about 1896-1909

George Washington JACKSON, seated 6th from the right, was born January 6, 1839, in Caledonia, Washington County, Missouri. He was the son of Benjamin JACKSON, born in North Carolina and lived in Tennessee (1828-1834.) By 1850, George and his siblings were found in the Jefferson County, Missouri, census. Their father had died in 1847 (mother is unknown). George enlisted in the Union Army, at the age of 22 years, in the Civil War. George went to St. Louis to enlist. On September 24, 1861, he enlisted in Co. I, 13th Missouri Infantry Regiment as a Private. In July 1862, this Regiment became Co. I, 22nd. Regiment, Ohio Infantry, where he served under Captain John CREAGEN in Company A. The Company Muster-In-Roll shows George was 24 years of age at St. Louis, Missouri, October 31, 1861. On April 6-7, 1862, he fought in the Battle of Shiloh, under General Lew WALLACE which was one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. In August 1863, he was listed as being in the U.S.A. General Hospital in Mound City, Illinois. In September of the same year, he was transferred to Keokuk, Iowa. He then served as clerk in the Regimental Adjutants Office with Company A, 22nd Ohio Infantry. He mustered out November 18, 1864.

George was a member of Colonel Nodine Grand Army of the Republic Post #140, in Champaign, Illinois, and George Washington Post #85, in Denver, Colorado. After his discharge, he returned to his home in Missouri. It is believed that the women in the photo were wives/widows and maybe daughters of the men. George's wife, Livonia Deborah WHITE, whom he married February 18, 1868 in DeSoto, MO, is not in the photo. Livonia died in 1925, and George in 1921. He is buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.
